I can’t praise Loving Corrections highly enough. It’s the sort of book I want get 10 copies of and hand out to people as I meet them; the person at my apartment building’s front desk, the mail carrier, the fellow that replaces the water at the studio, the woman who cuts my unruly hair. Ordinary people that I encounter lightly but repeatedly. That with the exchange of this book our very ordinariness would be shifted, upleveled and new conversations or exchanges could exist in the little microcosm of my day-to-day world. We are world-makers. These are the investments we forget are needed.
You are part of my microcosm.
There are so many people. And yet this moment, this forum, these words here join us, the you and the me, across space and time as we share an idea, an intention towards new perspectives.
So here is a spell to cast over our small world of expanding ideas. Share it out as you will. Read it aloud. Write it out. Fold it and put it under a stone as an offering. A potency. A spell…. isn’t that the best of words - magical and impossible and somehow childish and yet so powerful and something I can reclaim, use, and feel from my littlest self to the elder I’ll become.
A Spell for the Spring Equinox by adrienne marie brown
Let us remind the world
How many shades of green there are
How, together, we look like life itself
How tender the dirt gets in spring
Let us burst open, one multitudinous bud
Unfurled by that internal pressure of petal
Ripe, yes, and soft
You will learn to inhale us
Let us punch up from the earth, a lava
Bright and abundant dreams of tomorrow
Flowing molten and free
Turning ignorance to ash
Let us act like we got some roots
Know that we are held deeply
Even as we dance towards the golden breast of the sun
Life delectable again
Let us remind ourselves
That life moves ever towards life
This is the season of our nectar
Beloveds, this is the season worth the sting
Go well. Get some sun. Have a good laugh. There is more to come.
